What Should Be the Role of Assessment in Elementary (K-7) Education? Blog Post Prompt

Assessment is highly important for education. With elementary education in particular, assessment can play a key role in ensuring that students are understanding what they are learning, increasing accountability for teacher and students while being used as a guide for future lessons and to see where students are struggling and what solutions can be created to solve these difficulties. Therefore, this can guarantee collaboration and engagement with teacher and learner. Assessment can also play a role in elementary education by being a confidence builder for those that are excelling in their studies. Often, when a student works extremely hard on an assignment whether it be small or big, teachers like to recognize the student and their hard work by giving them positive feedback and celebratory action. Having this constructive critique of their work will motivate students to continue with their incredible determination and dedication with their studies which will also guide them to be this way as they get older and enter adulthood. This type of reassurance from teachers can also be a great influencer on other students which will influence and motivate them to also work hard to achieve that feeling of accomplishment and recognition that the other students are receiving. Assessment can be a great tool in building so many aspects of every individual learner.
